New lighting changes for 2020

Lighting seems to be changing by the day.  With LEDs, the entire field of lighting has been overhauled in just 3 years.   As the technology continues to get better and cheaper, we expect further changes to the design of fixtures and to the light itself.   Here are some things we can see.  Let’s have a look.

1. Better Light Quality
CRI, R9, THD and more may make no sense to you, but they are important for the quality of light.   Light has gotten very efficient recently but look for the new focus to be quality of light.  Reduced flicker may reduce headaches and fatigue, expect to see more of those.  R9 is more inclusive than CRI, so expect to see more R9>70 instead of CRI>90.   The technology is already out there in LED grow lights  that require full spectrum lighting, so expect regular lights to continue the trend.

2. Retro bulbs will be even bigger
Edison's bulbs or incandescent are no longer sold in stores because they have been removed. However, they are a trend for 2019 and continuing in 2020 because the look is so cool.   Designers are looking for light bulbs that, with the interior filaments, look cool and light the room.   Expect more retro but fortunately, you have options, such as vintage LEDs light bulbs with filaments that have come way down in price.

Look for Flame bulbs to be the next retro pop.    Looks like a flame, but still all LEDs.

3. Retro and industrial styles are returning but in more refined ways
If in 2019 we already announced that industrial and retro styles were becoming fashionable, by 2002 they will continue with us, but in a different way.  And there are some changes: we are seeing more elegant metals, more varied tones and alternative designs. All are based on the retro and industrial styles, but they look for the elegance of them, not the one that remains vastly.

4. Dark Sky Compliance
In an ever Eco conscious world we must now be mindful of light pollution and look for dark sky compliant lights.   Light pollution is light that goes into the sky.   Sometimes its inevitable, but in good outdoor design it can be avoided.   Lights that are pointed straight down, are appropriate output and beam angle and a low BUG rating ensure no light goes up.  BUG Rating - BUG stands for backlight, uplight and glare.   In new outdoor fixtures avoiding all 3 is critical

In order to be DLC Premium certified you have to be Dark Sky Compatible, so look for DLC Premium rated fixtures.

5. The LEDs will continue to be the best option
Not only because of the advantages they have, but because they are going to lower a little price making their choice even better.  For those few who have not yet opted for LEDs, the advantages you will find are:
a. They last longer than other bulbs. Even leaving them on 24 hours a day, the LED bulbs can last between 15 and 25 years active.
b. Although the price of light bulbs is more expensive, for longer active time allows the disbursement to be much lower. For example, if you buy a led bulb and another halogen, echo, etc. After x time you will have to change that last one and the cost will be double. Instead, the led bulb will not have to be replaced.
c. These bulbs emit almost no heat, nor gases or toxic.
d. They are suitable either to leave them on for many hours or to turn them on and off. In fact, when you turn them on you don't have to wait until they offer you 100%, they will do so at the same time.
e. They allow to play with them in the decoration offering bulbs of different colors or even that the same bulb changes color according to a pattern.

6. Accent lighting and Lots of Lighting
The new club in Hakkassan Las Vegas cost over $40m to build with over 30,000 LEDs including a custom $2mm chandelier that syncs and changes color to the music.   The bar has been raised.  Expect everyone to follow.

We talk alot about the dramatic drop in cost in LED Lighting, but there is also a size drop.   With LEDs, fixtures have gotten smaller and able to fit into tiny places.   The design results have been accent lighting everywhere.    "Neon LEDs" can be achieved in the for or rope or strips and accent just about anything.  Hidden fixtures are now the norm and expect even more.

When you think of a room, the first thing is that you have a lamp on the ceiling. However, for 2020 it will be about lamps plural.  You can create the appropriate lighting with appliques or “accent” lamps, that is, those that offer specific lights to specific areas.   For indoors that accent lighting on walls or paintings.   Under cabinets in kitchen, lots of landscape lights pointed everywhere.   Even more pronounced in commercial settings.

7. Naturalness: Natural lines and Natural materials
2020 continues a recent trend of return to nature. Lamps made with natural materials but with straight lines are in trends. The strange designs are gone, now it takes the most natural. The lights focus on simple geometric designs, soft neutral colors and a prominence of form over extravagant aesthetics.   This still means some right angles, but flowing designs are in.

As for materials, wood, bamboo, rope, etc are just some examples of the type of lamps.    Metal and glass are always favorites.   Of course, everything will depend on the style you like for your home. Natural materials will look great in natural styles, even classic. For the most modern, look for an industrial style with metal finishes cast iron and metal are ideal.

The lamps made with natural metals are going to be very fashionable (and you will have to combine it with the rest of the home's decoration and accessories).   The good thing about this color is that it combines quite well with any type of decoration.  It keeps the organic and natural theme as well.

We must talk about metallic finishes, because it is one of the lighting trends for 2019 and will be into 2020. In this case, it focuses on modern decorations that seek greater attractiveness since the metallic finish can be combined with the soft gold color to achieve an effect that will attract attention in many homes.

These are the points that we have considered most representative as lighting trends for 2020, but they are not the only ones, nor will they be. Normally, transitions are taking place throughout the year that will possibly be part of 2021. So, we will be alert in case we should notify you of any important changes so that your home is always up to date.
